Local SEO Checklist for 2026: Google Business Profile, Reviews, and Local Pages

Local SEO Checklist for 2026: Google Business Profile, Reviews, and Local Pages

Local search is where most service businesses win or lose. When someone searches for a plumber, a dentist, or an accountant near them, Google decides which few businesses to show in the map results. This checklist covers what matters most in 2026, based on Google's own description of local ranking and on Whitespark's annual Local Search Ranking Factors survey of local SEO experts.

    How Google decides

Google's help documentation says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, which draws on reviews, links, and mentions. You cannot change distance, so the work is relevance and prominence.

    1. Google Business Profile

    • Choose the right primary category. Whitespark's 2026 survey ranks the primary category as the single most important local ranking factor. Pick the most specific category that describes your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.
    • Verify the profile and keep it claimed by an account you control.
    • Use your real business name. Adding keywords or locations to the name breaks Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
    • Keep hours exact, including holidays. Whitespark's survey includes being open at the time of search among the top factors.
    • Set your service area or address correctly, and link to the most relevant page on your site, not always the home page.
    • Add real, recent photos of your team, vehicles, and finished work.
    • List your services with plain descriptions. These help customers. Whitespark's survey lists keywords in the description and services fields among local SEO myths, so write for people.

    2. Reviews

Whitespark reports that four of the top 20 local ranking factors involve reviews, and that five of the top 10 conversion factors are review related. Review recency also matters, so a steady trickle beats a burst followed by silence.

    • Ask every satisfied customer, ideally right after the job, with a direct link to your review page.
    • Reply to every review, positive and negative, in a calm and specific way.
    • Do not offer rewards for reviews, and do not ask only happy customers. Google's policies prohibit both.
    • Encourage photos with reviews. Whitespark cites research showing reviews with photos tend to stay visible longer.

    3. Your website's local pages

    • One page per core service, written for that service
    • A page for each real location or service area, with unique, useful content. Pages that only swap the city name are thin and do not help.
    • Your name, address, and phone number written the same way everywhere
    • An embedded map and clear directions for physical locations
    • LocalBusiness structured data. It is not a requirement for ranking, but it helps search engines understand your details.
    • A fast, mobile-friendly site. Whitespark lists site quality factors among the signals that affect local visibility.

    4. Listings and citations

Focus on accuracy over volume. Make sure your details match on the main platforms people actually use: Apple Maps, Bing Places, Yelp, and the directories that are specific to your industry. Wrong phone numbers and old addresses cause real lost calls.

    5. Engagement signals

Whitespark notes that Google has confirmed it measures engagement with your profile. Calls, direction requests, and clicks are signals, so a complete and active profile is not only about looks.

    6. AI search visibility

Whitespark added an AI search visibility section to its 2026 survey, and consistent mentions and reviews across the web feature in it. The same habits that help you in the map results also help AI tools describe you correctly. See our October 2 article.

    7. Measure

    • Google Business Profile performance: calls, direction requests, website clicks
    • Search Console: which queries and pages bring visits
    • Call tracking and form tracking, so you know which enquiries came from where
    • A simple monthly check of where you appear for your top five searches, in a few different neighborhoods

    A 30-minute monthly routine

    1. Check the profile for wrong information, new questions, or suggested edits.
    2. Reply to all new reviews.
    3. Add three new photos.
    4. Look at the performance numbers and note the trend.
    5. Send review requests to the last month's customers who have not yet reviewed.

    Questions owners ask

How long does local SEO take? Small fixes can show effects in weeks. Rankings against strong competitors usually take months. Be cautious about any promise of a fixed timeline.

Do I need a different page for every suburb? Only if you genuinely serve it and can say something useful about it.
