A website can have steady traffic and still produce silence. The cause is rarely mysterious. Visitors arrive, cannot tell within a few seconds whether you are the right company, cannot find an easy way to reach you, or do not trust what they see. Before you pay for more traffic, work through these ten checks.
One step comes before all of them: write down your baseline. Count last month's visitors, phone calls, form submissions, and bookings. Without a starting number you cannot tell whether a fix worked. Our October 13 article shows how to set this up.
The 10 fixes
- Make the phone number visible and tappable on mobile. Put it in the header, and add a sticky call button on phones. Most local searches happen on a phone, and a number that cannot be tapped is a lost call.
- Say what you do, where, and for whom in the first screen. Show a stranger your home page for five seconds, then ask what you sell and who it is for. If they hesitate, your headline needs work.
- Give every page one main action. Call, book, or request a quote. Secondary options can exist, but they should look smaller than the main one.
- Put proof next to the action. Real Google rating and review count, named testimonials with dates, years in business, license and insurance details, and photos of real jobs. Never invent any of these.
- Show prices, or explain how pricing works. Visitors who cannot get a sense of cost often leave to find someone who will tell them. See our October 8 article.
- Make the site fast on a phone. Heavy images and extra scripts quietly drive visitors away. See our October 12 article.
- Shorten your forms and test them. Ask only for what you need to respond. Submit a test entry every month to confirm it reaches the right inbox, and send an automatic confirmation so the visitor knows it worked. A broken form can lose leads for weeks before anyone notices.
- Build a page for each service and each area. A visitor who searched for a specific service should land on a page about that service, not a general home page.
- Close the trust gaps. Use real photos of your team and work, show your address or service area, include license details where relevant, keep HTTPS on, and make the contact page easy to find. Obvious stock photos of a team you do not have do more harm than no photo.
- Respond fast. This is the one owners underestimate. A Harvard Business Review analysis of web leads found companies that contacted a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as those that waited even an hour longer. The same research found an average first response of 42 hours among companies that responded at all. The data is from 2011 and based on B2B-style inquiries, so the exact numbers will differ today, but the direction has held up. After-hours chat, online booking, and an AI receptionist are three ways to close the gap. See our October 9 article.
Where to start
Fixes 1, 2, 7, and 10 are quick and cheap, so do them first. Then work on 4, 5, and 8, which take more writing and photography. Fixes 6 and 9 often need a developer.
How to tell whether it worked
Compare the 30 days after a change with the 30 days before it. Count calls, form submissions, and bookings, not only visits. Published landing page benchmarks commonly sit in the low to mid single digits and vary a lot by industry, traffic source, and offer, so compare yourself with your own baseline before you compare yourself with anyone else.
Questions owners ask
Do I need more traffic? Maybe, but fix conversion first. Doubling traffic to a page that does not convert doubles the cost, not the leads.
Should I add a chat widget? Only if someone or something answers it quickly. An unanswered chat box is worse than none.
